Meet: Discover Flagstaff

The Discover Flagstaff Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is charged with developing, promoting and maintaining Flagstaff as a year-round visitor destination with professional and visitor services that will benefit the community economically, environmentally and socially. In addition, the Flagstaff Visitor Center aims to introduce and educate visitors about the vast tourism opportunities within Flagstaff and the surrounding areas, and to increase the frequency of visitors to Flagstaff and length of stay.
Discover Flagstaff is part of the Economic Vitality Division of the City of Flagstaff. Economic Vitality also includes the Flagstaff Airport and the Community Investment Section, which consists of the Economic Development, Community Design and Redevelopment Programs and the Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library.
Discover Flagstaff is charged with administering tourism programs for the City of Flagstaff and receives an allocation of 30 percent of the Bed, Board and Beverage (BBB) tax collected. Programs include marketing to tour operators, travel agents, meeting planners, group coordinators and individual leisure travelers; as well as, development of public outreach and educational programs, media relations and media coverage. Discover Flagstaff is also responsible for the creation and maintenance of partnership opportunities locally and regionally.

Energy customers across Arizona want access to cleaner energy and the choice to adopt advanced technologies in their homes and businesses. Addressing these customer trends while continuing to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy is driving innovation at APS.
As Arizona’s largest and longest-serving electric company, APS continues to make investments in resources and technology to meet customers’ changing needs. The company already provides customers with an energy mix that is 50 percent clean and getting cleaner. That includes clean resources such as solar – APS ranks fifth among U.S. investor-owned utilities for solar capacity – and dependable, carbon-free nuclear power from the Palo Verde Generating Station, the nation’s largest electricity producer.
In February, APS announced plans to increase its clean energy resources to help customers get more “solar after sunset.” The company will add 850 megawatts of battery energy storage and at least 100 megawatts of large-scale solar generation by 2025. This represents a major down payment on Arizona’s continued progress to a clean, sustainable energy future.
One of the primary drivers for adopting technologies at APS is giving customers more choices on how to use, save and manage energy. From service plans that work with technology to smart thermostat programs that encourage savings during times of peak demand, customers now have more options. APS has launched a pilot program to increase access to charging stations for electric vehicles, making driving EVs more convenient for customers.
These programs are vital in helping customer service evolve as Arizona continues to grow. APS serves more than 1.2 million business and residential customers, encompassing 2.7 million people in 11 of Arizona’s 15 counties. By 2030, the company expects to add up to 700,000 new customers.
APS also continues to build a corporate culture that respects and leverages the different backgrounds, experiences and viewpoints of the communities the company serves. For instance, the APS Supplier Diversity and Development program has helped to enable $300 million in spending with diverse suppliers for five consecutive years.
That commitment to diversity applies to its 6,300 employees as well. APS works to attract and develop a diverse workforce and leadership team that fosters innovation, inclusion and high performance. Leaders encourage and support an open, engaging environment that recognizes employees’ unique needs and values their diverse talent.
APS is also highly engaged in the communities it serves. In 2018, employees devoted more than 121,000 volunteer hours, and APS contributed $10.8 million to charitable causes, including $3.6 million invested in education.

Meet: Go Lake Havasu
The Go Lake Havasu tourism bureau, formerly known as the Lake Havasu City Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), is the Destination Management Organization for the City of Lake Havasu and is accredited by Destinations International.
Go Lake Havasu is funded by a 3% hotel occupancy tax and a 1% restaurant/bar tax. Go Lake Havasu receives 75% of these tax revenues with 25% of the tax collections funding the city’s Partnership for Economic Development (PED).
At Go Lake Havasu, we share Lake Havasu’s story with the world; a story with a rich history, a dedication to innovation and a love for outdoor recreation. Meet: Sedona Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau
The Sedona Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau (SCC&TB) is the official Destination Management Organization (DMO) for the Sedona, Arizona area.
Most people deem Sedona’s tourism industry as a great success. Sedona’s 10,000 residents welcome an average of three million visitors a year which has an annual economic impact of $1 billion, supporting 10,000 jobs. Tourism generates 77% of the City’s sales taxes which pay for quality of life services that locals have come to depend on. Plus, the City of Sedona doesn’t have a property tax because of the revenues generated from tourism.
While tourism success brings many advantages, it also requires great civic responsibility. Mitigating negative elements such as congested roadways, overuse of specific areas, a reduced range of affordable housing, and competition for services between residents and visitors has taken top priority. “We feel challenged by issues such as traffic and overcrowding while at the same time valuing the economic benefit,” says Jennifer Wesselhoff, President/CEO of the SCC&TB.

Meet: The Prescott Tourism Office
The Prescott Tourism Office is part of the City of Prescott. They are a destination marketing organization representing over 1,400 hotel rooms, 18 meeting and banquet venues and a variety of attractions.
Prescott is located in the central highlands of Arizona, at an elevation of around 5,300 feet. They are a mile-high city, with over 450 miles of multi-use trails, 4 lakes, golf courses, and the unique Granite Dells formations. Their DMO promotes all of these assets, plus Sharlot Hall Museum, the Phippen Musuem of Western Art, the Smoki Musuem of American Indian art and culture, the Fort Whipple Musuem, the Western Heritage Center, and the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew Learning and Tribute Center.

As a community-based not-for-profit water and energy company founded over 100 years ago, SRP provides reliable, affordable water and power to more than 2 million people living in central Arizona. Meet: Hensley Beverage Co.
Back in 1955, Jim Hensley had a dream to bring ice cold beer – an American tradition best enjoyed with family and friends – to thirsty Phoenicians. That year, Jim started his company with just 15 employees and, together, they brought over 73,000 cases of Anheuser-Busch beers to folks in Phoenix.
Today – with a proprietary service fleet of more than 800 vehicles and the support of more than 1,100 employees – Hensley is one of the largest family-owned and operated beverage distributors in the nation. Meet: Arizona Diamondbacks
Today’s #MemberMonday is Arizona’s Major League Baseball team – The Arizona Diamondbacks! A member of the National League (NL) West division, the team has played every home game in franchise history at Chase Field, formerly known as Bank One Ballpark. The Diamondbacks memorably won the World Series in 2001, defeating the New York Yankees, making them the fastest expansion team in the Major Leagues to win a championship. They remain the only major league men’s sports team from Arizona to have won a championship title. Since joining the MLB, the Diamondbacks have won five NL West division titles, one NL pennant, one Wild Card game, and of course, the 2001 World Series.
The Diamondbacks also take pride in their commitment to the greater Arizona community. Established in 1997, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation was established with the mission to support three main areas of need: homelessness, indigent healthcare and children’s programs of all types, including education and youth baseball and softball field building and renovation, outreach programs and equipment. In addition, the Foundation has created strategic programs that address the needs of our community including veterans, police, teachers, and firefighters – just to name a few. To date, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation have made charitable contributions totaling more than $60 million to non-profit organizations from across Arizona.
Of the $60 million total, $50 million has been distributed through the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation. The majority of funds are raised through events and programs such as the annual Evening on the Diamond Gala, 50/50 Raffle, D-backs Celebrity Golf Classic, D-backs Race Against Cancer, Diamonds Back Field Building Program, License Plate Program, D-backs Authentics, Chase Field Tour Program, Mystery Ball, Online Auctions and major gifts from our players and partners in our community.
The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation distributes funds through our Community Grants, and Grand Slam Awards, Diamonds Back Field Building, Education Initiatives, Youth Baseball and Outreach programs, and strategic partnerships with key community partners and non-profit organizations.
Since 2000, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation has built or refurbished 41 baseball fields as part of the “Diamonds Back” Field Building Program representing a charitable investment of more than $10 million. In partnership with APS and a charitable gift from individual players, the program has allowed children from across the state to play baseball and softball at quality facilities. The fields generally feature new lights, an electronic scoreboard, new fencing and backstops, new irrigation and new grass and dirt. In 2012, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation partnered with the University of Phoenix to launch the D-backs School Challenge, a statewide grant program that challenged public, private and charter to school to “make their best pitch” for a $5000 grant. By the end of 2012, $250,000 had been awarded to 51 schools from across the state. The charitable grants funded everything from library upgrades to asbestos removal including a solar house project, multiple robotics programs, literacy projects, school gardens, and so much more.
To summarize the D-backs’ commitment to establishing a footprint in communities throughout Arizona, the organization became the first professional sports team to win the inaugural 2010 United Nations NGO Positive Peace Award, beating out other MLB teams such as the Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox as well as the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks and NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts. The award, which is viewed as a 21st century peace prize, honors and recognizes organizations positively impacting their communities through corporate responsibility. The D-backs were specifically awarded for their work with the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) and the Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan Phoenix.

Meet: Cactus League
Since 1947, the Cactus League industry continues to grow and contributes an estimated $644 million annually in economic impact in the state of Arizona. The Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners
Cactus League games don’t count. The money they generate for Arizona’s economy does.
The 2018 Cactus League season generated an estimated economic impact of $644.2 million, an 11% increase on the 2015 output estimate in real terms, according to a study by Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business. The study, which surveyed only out-of-state visitors, also found that the Cactus League generated $373 million for Arizona’s Gross Domestic Product. The study found that the median spring training visitor spent four days in Arizona and that the median traveling party spent $405 per day.
Generations of baseball fans from across the country have fallen in love with spring training, and its popularity shows no sign of waning. In 2017, the Cactus League drew a record 1,941,347 fans.

Meet: ISM Raceway
This past year, ISM Raceway underwent an impressive $178 million renovation to better serve fans and the community. The raceway’s grand opening will publicly debut its renovations for its fall NASCAR race November 9-11, 2018. The all-new ISM Raceway track focused on improving the fan experience, from new grandstands, to a completely redesigned INfield, relocated Start/Finish Line, new pedestrian tunnel, and more. Your race weekend experience has gotten a major upgrade! All of these improvements were made with your comfort, convenience and entertainment in mind, and ISM is excited to share them with you.
As recent as the 2018 March NASCAR Weekend, the Grandstand seats were benches. Those seats were upgraded from a bench to individual 20″ seats. Better yet, they come equipped with cup holders! The new grandstand also includes individual seating with a combination of 20″ and 21″ seats.
The INfield at ISM Raceway has been entirely reworked, starting with how you get there. Fans will now have convenient access from the DC Solar Power Pavilion near the new Start/Finish Line directly to The INfield. And speaking of The INfield, with five new garages that feature Driver interaction opportunities just for hardcore fans like you. The Pits, the amazing garage access sites, watching your favorite Drivers enter the Driver’s Meeting (and then the opportunity to watch the meeting through glass walls) will be a part of The INfield. Meet: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, America’s Friendliest Airport®, has an annual economic impact of more than $38 billion. Every day approximately 1,200 aircraft and more than 120,000 passengers arrive and depart at Sky Harbor. PHX Sky Harbor is funded with Airport revenue. No tax dollars are used to support the Airport.
America’s Friendliest Airport® is in the midst of more than two billion dollars’ in capital improvements. This includes the modernization of Terminal 3. The first phase, which opened in December 2016, included a larger consolidated security checkpoint to get travelers to their gates faster, new airline ticket counters, an outdoor area, and a Museum Gallery. The second phase includes an all new South Concourse with new shops and award-winning local dining options like Postino and Christopher’s Crush and new shops such as Lolli and Pops and Tech on the Go. This phase is slated to open in late 2018/early 2019. The final phase of the Terminal 3 modernization includes a renovated North Concourse which will feature new passenger amenities as well as additional local retail dining options and nationally-recognized shops. This portion of the project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
In addition, the Airport recently concluded a retail renovation to Terminal 4, which brought in 37 new shops, including local favorites like Roosevelt Row and Bunky Boutique as well as nationally-recognized brands like Tumi, Lucky Break, and two XpresSpa locations. As part of this project, a medical clinic also opened. USCareWays, which is located pre-security in Terminal 4, offers travelers and airport employees a walk-in urgent care option for non-life threatening illnesses, minor injuries, and select onsite prescription needs. The facility is open from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is also adding new international air service. Beginning May 18, travelers will be able to fly nonstop from Phoenix to Frankfurt, Germany aboard Condor Airlines. This new service will operate two days a week through September. This is in addition to new nonstop service to Montreal on Air Canada Rouge, additional daily service to London Heathrow on British Airways, and several new domestic routes including boosted service to Amarillo, Aspen, Austin and more.

Meet: PGA Tour
The PGA TOUR and the state of Arizona have a long-standing history, dating back to 1932 when the Arizona Open debuted at Phoenix Country Club. Since then, not only has the PGA TOUR’s presence in Arizona never wavered, it has grown. The Charles Schwab Cup Championship made its Arizona-debut in 2012 at Desert Mountain Club. Today, the tournament remains in the Scottsdale-Phoenix area, making a move to Phoenix Country Club in 2017.
The Charles Schwab Cup Championship is a 72-hole tournament on PGA TOUR Champions, a membership organization for professional golfers, age 50 and above. The event annually marks the final tournament of the season and is the third and final leg of the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, a points-based playoff system used to determine the season-long champion. The field of professional golfers that descend on Phoenix each year consists of the top-36 players on the Charles Schwab Cup points list. In 2017, after three years hosted at Desert Mountain Club, the year-ending event moved to Phoenix Country Club. The Charles Schwab Cup Championship is scheduled to return to Phoenix Country Club November 5-11, 2018.
Since moving from Desert Mountain Club to Phoenix Country Club in 2017, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship has developed new and exciting ways to entertain fans. Thursday through Sunday of tournament week, fans are encouraged to enjoy a number of venues offering first-class views of golf. Visit the Four Peaks Brewery Beer Garden, the Michelob Ultra Pop-Up Bar, or the Taste of Schwab presented by The Vig, which showcases local Phoenix restaurants. Meet: University of Phoenix Stadium
